Why our fish doesn’t need chemicals

Chemicals are used to hide slow, warm handling and fish that sits for days. Taaziq’s fish travels from the coast to Bengaluru chilled on ice, the way fresh fish should be kept.

  • • Cold chain: kept on ice from the coast to your door.
  • • Never frozen: no freezing at any step.
  • • Pre-booking: you order a day ahead, so we buy only what’s ordered and it doesn’t sit.
  • • Same-day delivery: delivered the day it reaches Bengaluru.

What is formalin and why is it used on fish?

Formalin is a formaldehyde solution. Some sellers use it to slow spoilage and keep fish looking fresh during long transport and storage. Ammonia and heavy use of untreated ice are other shortcuts. Fish that is kept properly chilled on ice and sold quickly doesn’t need any of them.

The formalin test, explained

Formalin can be detected with simple paper test strips. You wipe the strip on the fish’s skin or gills, and it changes colour if formalin is present, usually within a minute. The kits are inexpensive and available online, so anyone can check fish at home.

Check your fish yourself

Fresh, untreated fish has bright red or pink gills, clear eyes, firm flesh that springs back, and a clean sea smell, never a sharp chemical smell. We encourage every customer to check their order.

FAQ

Is Taaziq fish formalin-free?

Yes. Taaziq sources fish fresh for pre-booked orders and delivers the same day, so no formalin, ammonia or other preservatives are added.

Why do some sellers use formalin on fish?

Formalin is sometimes used to stop fish spoiling during long transport and storage. Taaziq keeps fish chilled on ice from the coast and buys only for confirmed orders, so it doesn't sit in storage.

How can I check if fish has formalin?

Use a formalin test strip on the skin or gills. It changes colour if formalin is present. Also check for red gills, clear eyes, firm flesh and a clean smell.
