About Mackerel (Bangda)
Indian Mackerel — Bangude in Karnataka, Bangda in Maharashtra, Ayala in Kerala, Ayalai in Tamil Nadu — is the humble hero of every coastal kitchen. It is small, silver-blue-striped, oily, and packed with the exact kind of flavour that fresh-caught fish is supposed to have: bold, briny, and unmistakably of the sea.
Bangude is famously oily and nutritious — and it lends itself perfectly to strong Indian spice pastes. The dark, oily flesh soaks up chilli, tamarind, kokum, garam masala, and coconut without disappearing. It is the fish for a rainy afternoon Bangude fry with rice, or a Konkani Bangude thail-piyao, or a Kerala meen mulakittathu.
Bangude is subject to daily market availability. The freshness curve on mackerel is unforgiving — an older mackerel is a very different fish from a fresh one. We only accept mackerel when it is bright-eyed, firm-fleshed and clean-smelling, and we pass on the rest.
Cuts we offer
- Whole fish, gilled and gutted
- Butterflied — for the classic Bangude fry
- Fillets — for a light lunch tawa
How to cook Mackerel (Bangda)
The Mangalorean Bangude fry is the definitive preparation: rub the whole gutted fish inside and out with a marinade of red chilli, turmeric, ginger-garlic, salt, tamarind and a spoon of rice flour, rest for 20 minutes, and shallow-fry in coconut oil for 3 minutes a side. For a Konkani thail-piyao, cook it in mustard oil with sliced onion, green chilli and vinegar. For a Kerala meen mulakittathu, use a red-hot chilli-and-coconut-oil masala with kudampuli — the tangy, dark, distinctly Malabar preparation that is unbeatable on rice.
How we deliver it fresh
We source from the coast in the morning, chill it on ice for the drive to Bengaluru and pack it hygienically before it leaves for your door in KR Puram, Whitefield, Marathahalli or the surrounding areas. Nothing here is frozen for days on end and nothing here is chemically treated — the only preservation is temperature. If you order in the morning we deliver the same day; if you order later, we schedule you into the next available slot on WhatsApp before we pack.
Frequently asked about Mackerel (Bangda)
Is Bangude the same as Bangda?
Yes. Bangude (Kannada), Bangda (Marathi/Hindi), Ayala (Malayalam) and Ayalai (Tamil) are all the same fish — Indian Mackerel (Rastrelliger kanagurta).
How do I know your Bangude is fresh?
Bright eyes, red gills, firm flesh, clean sea smell. We reject anything that does not pass those checks at the coast, and we invite you to check the same on delivery.
Do you deliver small quantities?
Yes. Our minimum is typically 500g. Ask on WhatsApp and we'll confirm today's size (pieces per kg) so you know how many fish you are getting.
