Fresh White Pomfret in Bengaluru
Delicate, silver-white, naturally sweet.
Also known as: White Pomfret · Paplet · Vavval · Manji
Delicate, silver-white flesh with a naturally sweet finish.
About White Pomfret
White Pomfret — Paplet on the Maharashtra coast, Vavval in Tamil kitchens, Manji in parts of coastal Karnataka — is the fish you cook when you want elegance on the table. The diamond-shaped body, the silver-white flesh, and the fine bone structure make it the celebration fish across half of the country. It is what walks out of Mumbai kitchens as Bombil-and-Paplet dinners, and it is what South Indian brides eat at their wedding lunches on the coast.
The flavour is delicate and naturally sweet — Pomfret is the fish for people who say they "don't really like fish". The flesh is pale, almost cream, tender, and lifts off the central bone in soft flakes. Because the flavour is so gentle, Pomfret does not need a heavy marinade; it prefers the tandoor, the tawa, the steamer, or a light green-masala coating.
White Pomfret is subject to daily market availability, and honestly-priced White Pomfret is worth waiting for. Yellow Pomfret and Silver Pomfret are related species — they are not what we sell as White Pomfret, and we will always tell you which one we are actually delivering.
Cuts we offer
- Whole fish, gilled, gutted and scaled — the traditional way to serve it
- Two-fillet butterflied — best for tawa and tandoor
- Fillets, skinless — for steamed and baked preparations
How to cook White Pomfret
The Mumbai way: score the whole fish across the diamond both sides, rub in a green masala of coriander, mint, green chilli, ginger-garlic, cumin and a squeeze of lime, rest for 30 minutes, and either shallow-fry on a tawa or roast in a hot oven at 220°C for 10–12 minutes. For a Malwani-style curry, use a red masala of soaked byadgi chillies, ginger, garlic, coconut and kokum — but add the pomfret only in the last 5 minutes so the flesh stays whole. Steamed Cantonese-style with soy, ginger, spring onion and a spoonful of hot sesame oil is unexpectedly beautiful on this fish.
How we deliver it fresh
We source from the coast in the morning, chill it on ice for the drive to Bengaluru and pack it hygienically before it leaves for your door in KR Puram, Whitefield, Marathahalli or the surrounding areas. Nothing here is frozen for days on end and nothing here is chemically treated — the only preservation is temperature. If you order in the morning we deliver the same day; if you order later, we schedule you into the next available slot on WhatsApp before we pack.
Frequently asked about White Pomfret
Is White Pomfret the same as Silver Pomfret?
No — they are related but different species. What we sell is genuine White Pomfret (Pampus argenteus). We do not swap in Silver or Yellow Pomfret and pretend they are White Pomfret. If we are out of White Pomfret we say so on WhatsApp.
What size should I order for a family of four?
A 500–700g whole pomfret feeds four as part of a meal with rice and dal. For a starter-style dinner, order two 400–450g fish so each person gets a butterflied fillet portion.
Can I get it butterflied and scored for the tawa?
Yes. Tell us on WhatsApp and we butterfly-cut, score and pack it kitchen-ready before it leaves for your door.
